Winter in Melbourne: The Ultimate Guide

6 min May 23rd, 2017
Hibernating through the winter is about as Melbourne as hook turns, wearing all black and ¾ lattes.

With this winter predicted to be the coldest on record it may be tempting to head online, buy a Snuggie and curl up on the couch until September, but buck the trend this year and experience everything our glorious city has to offer. Replace Netflix on the couch with cocktails on a rooftop, cancel your Uber Eats and settle in for a Sunday roast by an open fireplace instead.

Stay warm in the sky

On paper, the combination of a rooftop, Melbourne and winter doesn’t sound like anyone’s idea of a good time but the guys at The Provincial Hotel in Fitzroy and Imperial Hotel on Bourke Street have thought this one through. Perched on the top of The Provincial and Imperial Bourke Street you’ll find massive marquees decked out with comfy cushions, warm blankets and more outdoor heaters than your local Bunnings store.

Some of you may ask “Isn’t a main attraction of rooftop bars the beautiful views?” Did you really think the teams at The Provincial and Imperial didn’t think of this as well? Of course the marquees are clear and won’t get in the way of having the perfect city backdrop on your latest Instagram story.

Both rooftops are also offering some great winter food and drink specials! Make sure you check out Imperial’s Build Your Own hot chocolate station, where you can spike your mix then add your favourite toppings. Alternatively head to the Prov for their ‘Oh crepê’ package including bottomless drinks and build your own crepês, every Saturday and Sunday from 11am-1pm for just $49pp, more details on their website.
